Lorrie G. Vogel
Mixed Media
Lorrie Vogel is an encaustic artist, Professor of Design Thinking at the University of Oregon, and former design executive with more than two decades leading Design/Innovation at Nike. Trained in Industrial Design at Syracuse University, her creative practice bridges design, emotion, memory, and atmosphere through the luminous qualities of wax and layered surface.
Influenced by Impressionism and the emotional power of light, Vogel works primarily in encaustic and cold wax painting. She is drawn to these mediums for their unique ability to create depth, translucency, and a sculptural surface quality that shifts with light and viewing angle.

Why do I paint these chairs? I am trained as an artist with extensive studies in art history & painting is my happy place. Chairs are a fun medium. I look for chairs that speak to me of a certain time or artist. When I needed a dining table & chairs, I made a table out of a door & found a bunch of mismatched chairs. One day, sitting at the table, I thought it might be fun to paint portraits on the chairs so I could eat dinner with fascinating people. It was so much fun! I kept painting, even when my dining room was full; actually, I couldn’t stop. My style has evolved over the past 30+ years. From a portrait, on the front, another painting on the back & brightly colored legs. Now, I add images & motifs from the artist on other parts of the chair. I found a company that has fabulous artist-inspired fabric for upholstered seats to complement the theme. I love collaborating with customers on special orders. I hope you enjoy the work!
