Josie McDaniel (Studio #24)
I have been hooked on faces and figures ever since my first life drawing class and have been primarily creating figurative works ever since. I use webs of contour lines and layers of hatching to build up my forms. Creating portraits this way feels most similar to putting together a jigsaw puzzle, but instead of starting with a box of pieces, I make each piece simultaneously as I place it. The process of finding just the right contours and hatching line after line is a meditative experience. Music and playing instruments has also been a huge part in my creative journey. Many of my works are inspired by musicians who have particularly influenced me, or songs and lyrics that stir certain emotions or generate a particular visual experience in my mind's eye.
