⭐️ Ha Austin (Board President and one of the founders of LO: Open Studios)

Ceramics

Ha Austin's two-sided business cards highlight her two very different types of pottery. Her Sgrattito (carved) ware bring us whimsically decorative birds, animals and nature on food-safe daily ware, while her unique crystalline-glazed pieces have a fine art feel. Both styles begin with porcelain clay, which Ha shapes on the potter's wheel or by hand.

To create her fanciful graffito pieces, Ha explains, "I paint colored clay or underglazes on the pot and then I incise a pattern by carving through the top layers to reveal the clay color and ultimately a design on the pottery." This type of ware is fired in a hight-fired gas kiln to 2350 degrees and is food, dishwasher and microwave safe.

The designs on her crystalline pieces are formed through chemistry and a complex firing schedule done in an electric kiln which take 14-15 hours, creating two dimensional crystals on the surface of the pots. This type of ware is food and microwave safe. It is best to wash by hand when possible.

Melody Bush

Paper Art

Melody LOVES books! Her life revolves around books and has for a very long time. She is a retired school library assistant and have been an avid reader since childhood. While working in a library, she was dismayed to see old books discarded, destroyed, or sent to recycling. When she stumbled upon books being used as an art medium in 2018- she knew she had found my calling. Melody uses old illustrated nonfiction books for her book carving. Carving flower books are her favorite to do, along with bird books. Folded books and cut & folded books are made with hardcover fiction books that are used, damaged, or discarded. She enjoys making art out of something unexpected. All of her books are done by hand, one page at a time.

NOTE: Melody will not be participating in First Look Friday

Diana Strom

Painting

Diana is an accomplished acrylic painter whose artistic journey began in her youth. Her early, self-taught efforts evolved into the refined fine art pieces she creates today. Deeply inspired by the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest, Diana’s work captures the essence of coastal and forest landscapes and the diverse wildlife that inhabits them. She is especially passionate about painting animals, including cherished pet portraits. Her vibrant floral compositions push traditional color boundaries and radiate sunlit brilliance. In recent years, Diana has embraced textured, palette knife techniques to further enhance her artistic expression.

Steve Walgrave

Wood

Repurposed Wood put to good use!

Steve finds great pleasure in using wood from downed trees or other people’s wood scraps to make useable and/or decorative items. As a woodturner, Steve never knows quite what a piece of wood will yield – no two pieces are alike and some are quite surprising in their beauty.

Jean Teitelman

Ceramics

Jean has been working with clay for most of her life. It has always been a stress reliever for her, as well as, my creative outlet. Jean was a high school art teacher and had the opportunity to explore processes, materials and techniques. In retirement, she enjoys making functional as well as decorative pieces. Creating whimsical garden art is one of my favorite things to produce. Having the art in garden settings is very satisfying.
