Ian Madin

Stone Sculpture

Ian makes sculpture from foraged stones that have unique shapes, textures and patinas, resulting from the inconceivably long and unique journey each takes from its formation in the depths of time to the ditch beside the highway where he picks it up. The stones are travelers from deep time, an alien universe of that is hard to comprehend. Ian tries to make these stones beautiful and accessible, to help understand our place in the vast ocean of time. He shapes and polishes select surfaces with a wet grinder and diamond polishing pads and blades, always seeking to preserve some of the ancient natural surfaces to juxtapose with the freshly worked stone. He uses scrap steel, countertop stone, or found stones for bases of mounted pieces. Most pieces are between 6-24 inches in maximum dimension.

Mixed Media

The process begins with a base of my macro or aerial photo. Mixed media is added, using oil pastel, colored ink, and colored pencil. Each art piece is unique and original; these are not prints. Visual compositions that the eye sees and the mind reads in individual ways, portrays the visual beauty of this world or the difficult, emotional moment. From tree bark to urban graffiti, scratches on dumpsters, or patterns of mountains taken from planes, the work evolves into a cryptic, veiled world of beauty and mystery. Pareidolia abounds and fractals sometimes show up.

Jory's work has been exhibited in Oregon and Washington at: The Blue Sky Gallery, The Green Haus Gallery, Edmonds Art Fair & Gallery, Beaverton Art Mix, The Bush Barn Art Gallery, Pegasus Gallery, Verum Ultimum Art Show, and more.
